Winter is a time of rest. Well – that’s a theory anyway. In reality, it’s a time of holidays, binge-eating, and stress. That is why it is the most important time of the year to keep going with an exercise regimen. But when the days are shorter and the cold is more intense, it’s easy to find excuses to avoid the gym and stay huddled under the blankets. Here are some fun winter fitness ideas that will help you avoid hibernation.

Skiing

For thrill-seekers and casual exercisers alike – skiing is a great workout! After all, HealthFitnessRevolution says that skiing has all of the following benefits:

·       Improves proprioception.

·       Strengthens bones and joints.

·       Boosts your mood.

·       Increases cardiovascular endurance.

·       Strengthens lower body muscles.

·       Improves balance and core strength.

·       Promotes deep sleep.

·       Improves flexibility.

·       Promotes healthy eating habits.

·       Vitamin D exposure and a mood boost.

 

And, if you’re like me, there’s a low-key alternative to downhill exploits; cross country! This low-impact workout is a perfect option for those who want to enjoy some of the natural beauty of winter. Sledding and Tubing

It may seem silly, but sledding can be a great workout! Think about it. Each time you sled down a hill you have to walk back up therefore toning your body. And, you can use it as an opportunity to bond with your family. We suggest booking a one-night stay at a local hotel or resort and seeking out places to go during the day. Here are our Resort, a great local option is The New England Sports Park.

Skating

According to everyday HEALTH, “A 150-pound person can burn about 240 calories in 30 minutes of rounding the rink at a respectable speed.” Skating is fun for the whole family and is the perfect excuse to earn a cup of hot cocoa.

And, if you are from the Atkinson, New Hampshire area and you don’t know how to skate, a quick Google search will tell you that just over the border in Haverhill, MA there is a facility called The Ice Skating Academy to help you out!

Golf Lessons and Video Games

Video games have come a long way since their first launch. Here at the Resort we have virtual golf where you can book a tee time on 40+ venues for golf from all around the world including Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass, St. Andrews & more! This type of activity is great for staying loose during the cold. It’s an excellent way to spend some time with the “little golfers” you may have in your care and an even better way to settle a wager amongst friends! And, if you get hungry during your workout, you can grab some food from Merrill's Tavern and eat it while you play.
